The sense of smell is a powerful one of our five senses. Smells can conjure memories and elicit certain behaviors. Our scent memories remind us of food experiences and family members. It can bring about emotions of romance or fear (think about the last time you put a slice of bread in the toaster and forgot about it — what? only me?).
The sense of smell is the only one of our five senses that is directly linked to the limbic lobe of the brain, which is the emotional control center of our bodies. If you think about the sense of smell in relation to the other four senses, it is the one sense that elicits an emotional reaction first, versus a logical one. You touch a rock, your sense of touch sends information to your brain, which processes components like rough, cold, smooth, etc.. It’s only after that information is processed that we may then feel an emotional response such as; “I remember skipping rocks with my big brother when I was a kid. What good memories.” However, when you smell a perfume your sense of smell sends information to your brain that processes an emotion or memory; “That smells like my Grandmother. I miss her.” Pretty cool stuff right?!
So what does all this mean for essential oils? One of the three ways to use essential oils is aromatically. The simplest way to do that is with an ultrasonic diffuser. Diffusion breaks down and distributes essential oil molecules into the air. When you breathe these molecules in they are sent to your olfactory bulb, which sends messages directly to the limbic system. This is big time because the limbic system itself is involved in motivation, emotion, learning, and memory. It is also directly connected to parts of the brain that control heart rate, blood pressure, stress levels, and more! Essential oils that are inhaled will be processed by this system and send their therapeutic abilities to your brain.
In light of this fascinating anatomy lesson, lets talk diffusers! Young Living has many diffuser options. What you should choose will vary depending on your personal needs. Below is an overview and my personal pick.
Hands down, I feel the Premium Starter Kit is the way to go. With the price of the kit and all the oils, you basically get a free diffuser. Young Living offers four different diffuser options with their Premium Starter Kit; Home, Dewdrop, Rainstone, and Aria.
Of these options, I have only personally owned the Home and Dewdrop. The Dewdrop is my pick. It’s quieter than the Home diffuser, so I like it best for diffusing while I sleep. I dream of the Aria…one day it will be mine.
Young Living does offer several other types of diffusers that are worth a mention.
These lists are not exhaustive. Here is a comparison chart of all the Young Living diffuser options. I’ve only mentioned the Young Living brand, as I highly recommend using one of their diffusers with these pure therapeutic grade oils.
They come with a one year warranty
The grade of plastic used is meant to withstand these powerful oils
I think the smell is more pure and strong when using a Young Living diffuser
I love this company and their beautiful collection of diffuser necklaces. Unlike a lot of diffuser jewelry I have seen, these styles are fashionable and actually fit in with my wardrobe.
So there ya go! Grab a diffuser and start reaping the amazing benefits of these oils in an easy to implement way!
